We are delighted to welcome Professor Elisa Brilli, Professor of Italian and Medieval Studies, as the incoming Director of CMS starting 1 July 2022. After studies at Rome "La Sapienza" (MA, 2004) and Paris EHESS (PhD 2009), and postdoctoral fellowships in Florence, Montreal, Paris, and Zurich, Professor Brilli joined the University of Toronto in 2015, and was awarded tenure in 2020, with a promotion to full Professor following in 2022. The author of dozens of studies of medieval Italian and Latin literature, religion, and manuscript culture, including Firenze e il Profeta. Dante fra teologia e politica (2012) and the groundbreaking Dante: Des vies nouvelles (2021; co-authored with Giuliano Milani), Professor Brilli has in a short space of time achieved a stellar international reputation within medieval studies. Previously PhD Coordinator at CMS (2019-21), she brings to her new role as Director an exceptional breadth of knowledge across the various disciplines of medieval studies and a passionate commitment to excellence in graduate education and the wellbeing of our students.
