Professor Emeritus Walter Goffart taught at the University of Toronto from 1960 until his retirement as professor emeritus in 1999. During those years, he published ten scholarly books and over sixty essays, varying in topics from studies on Late Rome, barbarian kingdoms, the early Middle Ages, and historical atlases. Upon his retirement, a Festschrift dedicated to his work and teaching was published, edited by Alexander Callander Murray.

He continued to publish extensively after his departure from U of T, beginning a new appointment at Yale University in 2000. He will be remembered as an influential voice in the field of medieval studies.
